Gov. Ron DeSantis is holding a news conference in Tallahassee after Florida voters chose Republican Byron Donalds as the state’s next governor and Republican Ashley Moody narrowly won the Florida U.S. Senate race.
Donalds defeated Democrat David Jolly and will become Florida’s first Black governor when he takes office next year. DeSantis, who is leaving office, was not eligible to seek another consecutive term.
Moody defeated Democratic challenger Angie Nixon to serve the final two years of former Sen. Marco Rubio’s term. Florida voters also approved Amendment 3, which will bring major changes to property taxes.
The results came as Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress. Florida voters also decided congressional, state legislative and local races, including school board and county commission contests.
