(Gray News) – Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis called the name of Hurricane Isaias “not normal.”
Isaias, which is pronounced “ee-sah-EE-ahs,” is the Spanish form of the name Isaiah.
“I don’t know how to pronounce this, because it’s not normal,” DeSantis said. “I’m calling it Isaiah. You guys can call it what you want. I know that’s not how you pronounce this, it’s something else but it’s weird and I’m just going to keep butchering it for the next 72 hours. And I’d rather just be that — so I’m calling it Isaiah.”
DeSantis made the comments during a news conference about a Florida appeals court tossing parts of a grand jury report on alleged misuse of taxpayer money surrounding Hope Florida.
Hurricane Isaias is continuing to strengthen in the Gulf after becoming the first Atlantic hurricane of the season.
The storm is forecast to make landfall along the northern Gulf Coast later this week as a dangerous Category 2 hurricane.
