LAKELAND, Fla. — Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the return and expansion of Florida’s Second Amendment and outdoor recreation sales tax holiday, pairing the rollout with a ceremonial groundbreaking for a new state archery facility at the Tenoroc Public Use Area.
The extended tax exemption period, running through Dec. 31, suspends state sales tax on a wide array of firearms, ammunition, hunting gear, and camping equipment. Building on last year’s holiday, which officials said delivered nearly $50 million in savings, the state doubled price thresholds for items like bait and tackle and expanded exemptions to cover additional firearm accessories, including magazines, scopes, triggers, and suppressors.
State officials estimate the combined tax relief could reach $100 million over two years.
“Florida will suspend the collection of sales tax on firearms, ammunition, a wide range of hunting, fishing, and camping equipment,” DeSantis said. “Combined with last year, you could end up with $100 million in tax relief just on our Second Amendment tax holidays.”
Alongside the tax savings, state leaders broke ground on the new Florida Archery Center, authorized in the state’s current budget to expand shooting sports offerings at Tenoroc. The facility will build upon existing public shooting ranges, sporting clays, and air rifle fields.
Chief Conservation Officer for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission George Warthen emphasized that youth participation in shooting sports can serve as a key gateway to conservation and outdoor activity.
“Archery is a sport that is a gateway to the outdoors, and when we look across the country, we know that families and children that participate in archery often take the next step to greater conservation involvement,” Warthen said, noting that more than 10,000 Florida students currently participate in archery programs through school physical education classes.
