DeSantis sidesteps Florida governor candidate endorsement during Lehigh Acres visit
LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. —Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis visited Lehigh Acres on Thursday to support Florida students but avoided endorsing a candidate in the governor’s primary race when asked about his plans.
Candidate Paul Renner is already using the governor’s words as a vote of confidence, though DeSantis stopped short of endorsing anyone.
DeSantis said other candidates are struggling to get their names out there, while polls show Byron Donalds leading the race.
“Honestly, winning it doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be a good governor,” DeSantis said.
DeSantis also said he supports Amendment 3, which calls for reducing property taxes. That will be on the November ballot.
A Florida judge ruled that the wording of Amendment 3, titled “Save Our Homes from Excessive Property Taxes,” was confusing and ordered the attorney general to rewrite it.
DeSantis said he has seen the revised wording and called it fair.
“It’s going to be a very good summary. Very straightforward. People are going to know you’re going to get tax relief,” DeSantis said.
